A Chorus Line is celebrating its 40th anniversary this week. I was 4 years old when it debuted on Broadway and 8 years old when my Mom took me to the Place des Arts in Montreal to see the traveling production of it. It changed my life! It would be my very first introduction to musical theater.
The moment the music started playing I was overcome with such emotion that I started to cry. That feeling was so huge I couldn’t express it any other way. It wasn’t sadness at all, it was feeling everything, all at once and it was way bigger than my 8-year-old brain could process.
Once I’d calmed down, the show took off and I was changed forever. I lived their stories and loved their songs and realized in that moment that THAT was what I was supposed to do.
Marvin Hamlisch ( who passed in 2012) composed these gorgeous, personal songs on an album I can never get sick of listening to. I owned the LP when it was released, I bought the cassette in the 80’s, the CD in the 90’s and now it plays on my iPod constantly.
Michael Bennett was the shows brilliant director and co-choreographer who passed away way too soon.
Donna McKechnie (Cassie) and Patricia Lopez (Morales) were my heroes and I wanted to be just like them.
This may have nothing to do with cosmetics, but TisB is about taking the time each day to do something nice for yourself. Musical Theater has enhanced my life for the better in every single way.
If you’ve never been exposed to A Chorus Line, listen to the soundtrack and fall in love with their stories or even better go see a broadway show if you ever get the chance because it will change your life for the better.
“Kiss today goodbye and point me toward tomorrow…”
