INDIAN SUMMER (school)…

If there is any justice in this world, we are due for a nice, long Indian summer. After last years brutal winter, and this summer’s delayed start, we east coasters deserve a glorious Indian summer.

If justice prevails, I am going to school you in how best to care for your skin so that your transition to fall is flawless.

Step 1.  Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield. I generally loathe the way moisturizers with sunscreen smell, feel and block my pores. This one does none of the above, if anything it helps your skin to look better. It goes on like a gel-type lotion but feels powdery on the skin. It offers broad spectrum sun protection of 30 and I’ve been wearing it all summer and loving every minute of it. It feels more like a primer than a moisturizer and my foundation goes on smoothly and evenly. This product is a must!

Step 2. I’m not one for heavy makeup in the heat, you sweat…it runs and no one is happy! Cut to Charlotte Tilbury Beach Sticks, hands down my very favorite product of summer 2015. I have never been a fan of any of these cream blush sticks, until now. WOW! I have this product in 3 colors, Ibiza, Moonbeach and Formentera and I wear them all. I psychotically adore them. Ibiza I use as a bronzer, Moonbeach gives me that ‘glow from within’ look and Formentera is like my perfect blush. What makes everything Charlotte Tilbury does even more amazing is that there are fabulous how-to videos online for all of her products. I do most of my Tilbury shopping at Net-a-porter.com because their delivery is so efficient and getting a package from them feels like christmas morning. On their website they show application techniques but for even better tutorials go to the Charlotte Tilbury website directly and learn from the master.

With these two recommendations you are set for September and then some…I have no intention to stop using any of todays items come winter time either…Enjoy and let me know how they work for you.

Multi-Task Face Mask…

I’m not one for multi-tasking. I just can’t do it! I do one thing at a time and everything gets done properly. Those products that claim to do two things or more…sorry, they don’t do either effectively.

James Read (faux tan master) has changed all that. He has created an overnight tanning mask that puts you to bed one color and wakes you up beach beautiful. James Read Sleep Tan Mask for face does just what it promises. Normally I use a product for roughly one month and if it still knocks my socks off you get to hear about it, but with this item I couldn’t keep it to myself for that long.

I have never used something that produces results overnight and especially after just one use. They suggest to use it twice a week and believe me until Mother Nature shines her rays on my face I will do just that.

I worried that if I used a product like this I would wake up to a face full of zits or worse, but to my surprise not only did I wake up looking like a bronzed goddess, my skin actually looked great. Plus as an extra bonus, there’s none of that funky soggy cereal smell that most self tanners have.

I can’t wait to use it again!

Before you go out to buy it let me give you some pointers so you can really reap its benefits.

1.  Always exfoliate before applying a self tanner (you want the smoothest skin possible to you get an even glow).

2.  Apply it evenly with a foundation brush right to your hairline so you don’t look like you’re wearing some kind of freaky foundation.

3.  Sleep well and enjoy the results the next morning.

It really is that simple. James Read products are also available at netaporter.com ($38 us or $46 cdn).

Glow on…you won’t be sorry.

At The Ballet…

A Chorus Line is celebrating its 40th anniversary this week. I was 4  years old when it debuted on Broadway and 8 years old when my Mom took me to the Place des Arts in Montreal to see the traveling production of it. It changed my life! It would be my very first introduction to musical theater.

The moment the music started playing I was overcome with such emotion that I started to cry. That feeling was so huge I couldn’t express it any other way. It wasn’t sadness at all, it was feeling everything, all at once and it was way bigger than my 8-year-old brain could process.

Once I’d calmed down, the show took off and I was changed forever. I lived their stories and loved their songs and realized in that moment that THAT was what I was supposed to do.

Marvin Hamlisch ( who passed in 2012) composed these gorgeous, personal songs on an album I can never get sick of listening to. I owned the LP when it was released, I bought the cassette in the 80’s, the CD in the 90’s and now it plays on my iPod constantly.

Michael Bennett was the shows brilliant director and co-choreographer who passed away way too soon.

Donna McKechnie (Cassie) and Patricia Lopez (Morales) were my heroes and I wanted to be just like them.

This may have nothing to do with cosmetics, but TisB is about taking the time each day to do something nice for yourself. Musical Theater has enhanced my life for the better in every single way.

If you’ve never been exposed to A Chorus Line, listen to the soundtrack and fall in love with their stories or even better go see a broadway show if you ever get the chance because it will change your life for the better.

We’re not talking POPEYE…

Hello Sailor is the name of today’s product and I’ve been singing its praises to just about anyone who’ll listen. Now it’s your turn to hear about why this one item is all that and then some.

Some products are fun, some are user-friendly, some are life altering…this one is all the above. Lipstick Queen’s ‘Hello Sailor’ is a sheer lipstick that feels more like a balm. Its loaded with vitamin E so your lips stay moist and hydrated all day, but the kicker here is it’s blue.

Whoa people, I haven’t gone all punk rock between blogs! This blue lipstick (and I mean hardcore, navy blue) goes on smooth and essentially enhances your lips’ natural berry tones. While all the magazines push the ‘berry/wine’ lip, Hello Sailor is actually something real people can wear in real life. What I love most about this product is that it looks different on every single person who wears it. For $25, it’s like getting a custom-made balm from Poppy King herself.

Available directly from Lipstick Queen online, you can also purchase this item at Barneys, Space NK boutiques and from Net-a-porter (whose link is above).

I’ll admit, the sheer terror on peoples faces as you apply blue lip color to your pout is pretty fun, but in all honesty, this product delivers in every way. It’s easy to use (you don’t even need a mirror to apply it), its flattering on all lip shades and with this in your pocket you’re ready to go from day to night without a hitch.

Fyi, I love this stuff so much I have every intention of trying Lipstick Queen’s ‘Frog Prince’ once it becomes available. I’ll let you know if that one ends happily ever after…until then I’m all aboard…

Blair, Jo, Nathalie & Tootie…

During my formative years Wednesday nights were spent in front of the TV waiting for the next new episode of The Facts of Life. For those of you too young to remember, it was a sitcom that aired on NBC for nine seasons during the 1980’s. For those of you who can’t forget, it was the original “must see tv.”

It was the story of 4 girls at an upscale boarding school under the guidance of that school’s nutritionist. It doesn’t sound like much but I assure you, if you were a young girl in the 80’s it was everything! There was the extremely wealthy and gorgeous Blair Warner, the funny, Jewish girl Nathalie Green, the tomboy with a tough exterior Jo Polniaczek and wannabe actress Tootie Ramsey. As a young girl you could absolutely identify with at least one if not all of these girls and as an adult you had to appreciate their role model Edna Garrett.

On January 13th of this year, SHOUT FACTORY released all nine seasons of the show in a DVD boxed set collection.

As a blogger of cosmetic must haves, some must be wondering what’s up with the television show?

When I started TisB I promised to endorse things that I actually use and love and would recommend to absolutely everyone. Well, The Facts of Life is in fact (pun slightly intended) one of those recommendations.

This was a show about girls, who looked like us, talked like us and like us, made mistakes and learned from them. There was a certain amount of integrity with these girls and with the show itself. You didn’t watch to see what they were wearing, or who was going to backstab who. They dealt with many serious issues and the viewer could always take away something positive from each episode, without the show being too preachy.

I’ve recently re-watched a bunch of old episodes and cannot believe some of the topics they covered, from sexual assault, to race issues, from drunk driving to abortion, pretty relevant stuff even by today’s standards. What they never did was exploit topics for exploitations sake.

I mention this box set today for 2 reasons, #1. Nostalgia, everybody loves a good dose of yesteryear (and this show does stand the test of time) and #2. Today’s youth! When I see what airs on TV for tweens (a term that didn’t exist when I was one) and teens it frustrates me, it’s not all Mean and Gossip girls! There are other choices too.

What I’m suggesting is that Moms out there introduce your girls to Eastland’s girls and see what they think. There is definitely something for everyone on these discs and I’m pretty sure no one will be disappointed.

“You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have the Facts of Life.”

G’day Mate Indeed…

Prediction: You are all going to love me for this one!

Australia has been responsible for providing the world with many great gifts; Cate Blanchett, Hugh Jackman, Baz Luhrmann, Ugg Boots, Poppy King, INXS, Olivia Newton-John, Helen Reddy (don’t judge me, everybody loves “You and me Against the World”), the list goes on and on.

At this point I’m fairly certain you are rereading the list above, nodding your head at every name mentioned but taking a double take at Poppy King. You may not know her name now but you will remember it well once you try today’s item of choice.

Poppy King is a native of Melbourne, Australia who wasn’t quite satisfied with the lipstick selections down under, so she did what most awesome, take charge ladies do, she decided to make her own. Lipstick Queen is that company and today’s product is their Invisible Lip Liner.

All I can say is AMAZING! This is the perfect product and for so many reasons. Not only does it work with absolutely any lipstick color out there, it works equally well with glosses and stains. For lack of a better phrase, this product is idiot proof.

To be honest, I’m pretty bad at drawing any form of line, anywhere, even with a ruler, so you can only imagine the difficulty I have trying to outline the shape of my lips. This product is 100% colorless, so basically, you cannot screw this up. Even with the reddest of colors, you get a perfect shape every time, with no color bleeding at all.

Thank you Australia for Poppy King. I can forgive you for your creation of Vegemite, but only because you are also responsible for the creation of my brother in law and niece!

So line away lip lovers, this item is the real deal!

Don’t Bite the Hand that Feeds You…

Excellent advice, often intended to remind people to be kind to those that nurture you inside and out.

Today however we’re getting very literal.

I cannot be the only one whose cuticles dry out and eventually stray from their place along side the finger nail. I also cannot be the only who picks and pulls at them (often with my teeth-hence, biting the hand that feeds me)! Its gross, I know but we don’t judge here!

With winter creeping up this dryness will only get worse, but fear not finger biters, I have The Cure!

Deborah Lippmann’s The Cure  that is. This stuff smells great, isn’t greasy and really does the trick. I apply it morning and night around my nail bed and within a 24 hour period my ‘cuticle erections’ are a thing of the past. I actually noticed a difference after one use.

Your cuticles will thank me for this one and to them I say “you’re welcome!”

Drugstore Cowboy…

25 years ago this month, Matt Dillon starred in Gus Van Sant’s critically acclaimed film Drugstore Cowboy. It was Van Sant’s first major motion picture (Mala Noche was his first film) and it was the first time critics realized Matt Dillon had more than just good looks in his arsenal.

If this were a film blog I would continue down this path and trust me, nothing would make me happier than to marinate on Matt Dillon for the next little while, however we have work to do and I think you’re going to thank me for this one.

Today’s featured item is classic, versatile and will only set you back $12 us or $15 cdn. Found at your local drugstore (hence todays title) Maybelline’s The Nudes is quite possibly my best find yet. With 12 amazing shades, this palette performs! You get a variety of neutral shadows, some shimmery, some matte but all of them wearable.

Often shimmery shadows make your lids look like disco balls, whereas matte ones can look cakey. These go on smooth, look unreal and last all day.

Admittedly I am a fancy pants and we all know my taste in cosmetics runs at the higher end of the spectrum, but this could very well be the best $15 you ever spend! You won’t find another palette out there that is this good for this little.

So before I bid you adieu, let us take a moment to get psyched about great finds at great prices and well of course…Matt Dillon!

Don’t Kill The Messenger…

Winter is on its way!

It sucks, I know, but rather than curse this news, I suggest you heed my message, it’ll help your skin to not only survive but thrive during this chilling time.

Ok, my ominous winter talk is done. Now let’s get down to business.

MOISTURE… MOISTURE… MOISTURE…that is the only thing that is going to save you over the next little while from dry, itchy skin, flaky patches and aging before your time.

Today’s list is designed to help you look like you spent the winter hibernating or as many of my relatives do, migrating to Florida.

Here goes:

I am most definitely having a Kiehl’s moment as of late. In the last few months they have released two products that have me singing their praises. First was their Super Multi-Corrective Cream  ($68 cdn), by far my new favorite moisturizer with anti-aging benefits, major hydration and a scent that is calming to my nerves and skin. The results are complexion perfection. I use it both day and night and I couldn’t be happier, plus the container is purple…I love purple.

super multi

Their second new release is the Patchouli & Fresh Rose Skin Softening Body Lotion ($30 cdn) which provides 24 hour  hydration but more importantly smells absolutely divine. This lotion does come in other scents, but none have captivated me more than this one. Since I’ve started using it my perfume hasn’t seen the light of day, it seems to sit, sadly on my vanity waiting for me to give it a spritz. I would bathe in the stuff if I could. Kudos to Kiehl’s!

Patchouli-Rose-BL

Again, a reminder of today’s title…Don’t Kill the Messenger!

Chapped lips happen to good people! They don’t have to happen to you anymore! I have in fact found the absolute best lip balm EVER, but it is pricey. By Terry Rose Balm is hands down the very best there is in lip care, but it will set you back $60 us. What it will also do is keep your lips moist and protected all day long. This stuff is literally The Balm! Your lips will thank you.

by terry baume de rose

I think we’re off to a good start with today’s recommended products. They are all my very favorites and I know you will love each and every one of them. Whichever you chose to start with ENJOY…

There will be more to come soon…

Stay hydrated…

Lip-Lock!

We’ve all been there, that gross moment when you reach into your handbag to fetch your lipstick and its covered in purse lint, because you failed to cap it properly. Or worse, scenario number 2, where you reach into your bag for a kleenex only to pull out a blood stained tissue…only it’s not blood, it’s your lipstick whose top came off and now it’s all covered in kleenex bits. Sadly, nobody wants to wear purse lint on their lips!

Stress no more…this problem is solved!

Lancome has come out with their Lip Lover Lip Perfector. This isn’t quite a lip stick or a gloss, it’s sort of both and it’s sort of amazing. Firstly, its texture is gloss like, but it has major pigment so it covers like a lipstick. It’s never sticky, it’s very long wearing and it is really moisturizing. I can’t remember the last time I was this excited by a lip product!

You don’t really need a lip liner to wear with it because it looks great neat or messy. Its applicator is a spongy wand and its thick texture really adheres to your lips so it’s never runny.

Still, its very best feature by far is its packaging.  It has a small button on the side of the tube that needs to be pressed in to open the product and clicked in to close it.

Stuff this in your pocket and you are good to go for the day!

They come in 18 different shades, so you’re bound to find one that suits you. I’m partial to Rose des Cygnes!

You can find them anywhere Lancome is sold (Sephora, Pharmacies, Department stores).

Buh Bye to purse lint pouts…Hello to luxurious lips!

You’re Welcome…
