Tricks ARE Treats…

With Halloween just around the corner why do we need to choose between Trick or Treat? Can’t we have both?

Today’s post is going to be loaded with tricks and tips I’ve learned over the years to help solve some of your cosmetic woes. They may not be of the chocolate variety, but they are treats indeed. Some may even change your life, well your cosmetic life that is!

Let us begin…

#1.  Blue (not orange) is the new black:  If you make your living staring at a computer (like I do) or if you spend countless hours shopping online (like I do) you may have noticed that the whites of your eyes are no longer only white, but rather white with a myriad of red lines running through them.  Tip #1 is about how to make your eyes appear whiter and brighter. Ditch your black eye liner pencil and replace it with navy or dark blue. Lining your eyes with a blue pencil will make your eyes appear whiter, it’s that simple. If you really want to commit, go with a dark navy mascara as well.  It’s not as freaky as it sounds…I do it all the time and I’ve lived to tell about it.

My go to liners are Trish McEvoy Intense Gel Liner in Arabian Nights and Bobbi Brown Long Wear Eye Pencil in Black Navy (both retail for $28 but Trish often offers a 20% friends and family discount so check it out). As for the mascara, I love Chanel Le Volume De Chanel Mascara in Bleu, its voluminous, non-clumpy and doesn’t flake off half way through your day. FYI it passes my 3 times test.

#2.  Skincare Vs. Cosmetics:  Here is the secret, it’s not a battle! We need both. One protects and nourishes your skin while the other makes you look your best. It’s analogy time, imagine your face as your body, you wash it, moisturize it and then you put your clothes on. Your cosmetics are clothes for your face! Don’t go naked!!

#3.  Primetime:  Most of us don’t use primer. Truth be told, I used to think it was an invention of cosmetics companies to get the consumer to buy yet another product. The fact is, primer really is an important step in your cosmetic routine.  Firstly, a good primer evens out your skin tone, it also seals in your moisturizer which allows for a much smoother foundation application. Because of  the latter, your foundation doesn’t get a chance to clog your pores, which means you’re zit free with great looking skin. My go to primer and foundation are both made by Hourglass. Their Veil Mineral Primer has a spf 15, helps minimize pores, fight redness and when used with Hourglass Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation your complexion will look pretty much flawless. I particularly love the liquid to powder texture, one pump will cover your entire face and leave your skin with a matte finish all day, which means “bye-bye oily T-zone!”  I use my fingers to apply both products and will smooth out the foundation with a foundation brush.  I happen to love Hourglass’ Brush #2 for blush/foundation because it’s a PETA approved product which uses Taklon instead of animal hair and it is actually really soft and user-friendly. Hourglass is sold at Sephora stores, Barney’s New York and always available on their website.

#4.  The eyes are the windows to your soul:  Well my windows are located pretty close to one another, if this resonates with you, you needn’t worry anymore. This is my favorite tip/trick on the list. Since relocating my eyes isn’t an option, I suggest you try the following: When lining your eyes, never line the inner corner, start at the outer corner and stop lining right above the center of your lid (above your eye-ball) then smudge outward for drama. The smudging also helps to clean up any mess you’ve made along the way (my fine motor skills could use some improvement so I know a thing or two about this).

#5.  Browbeating:  Stop the insanity!!! Every decade the brow trend changes, sometimes thin is in, sometimes bold is beautiful! Regardless of trend, your eyebrows are on your face and you must take that into consideration. Tweeze for your face and not for some magazine trend!

For fear of some esthetician sneezing and waxing off all of my eyebrows I have always plucked my own brows and I have always followed these simple rules. #1. Only tweeze hairs underneath the outer part of your brows. #2. What you do to one side, do to the other, symmetry is key. Lastly, #3. Do not pluck more than 3-5 hairs at a time.  Follow these three steps and you’ll go from brow to WOW!

I like Tweezerman slanted tweezers, available at Sephora stores and most pharmacies.

So there you have todays list of helpful tips and tricks! I hope there is one in there that works for you.

Happy Halloween y’all!

BOO!

Summer Lovin’…

Remember when the school year finally ended and a great summer adventure awaited you?

Whether you went to summer camp or vacationed with your family, there always seemed to be some cute boy or girl who seemed to occupy your heart and mind for those two blissful months.

It’s time to fall in love again, but this time it’s with this todays recommended product!

Trish McEvoy Face Shapers is my current obsession and I’m pretty sure it will be yours too.  If you buy 1 make up product this summer, this should be the one.  For $75 you are getting 4 products in one amazing mirrored compact.

Everything about this item is perfection, firstly it comes in 2 color choices (aptly named 1 and 2) so there’s no drama about which one to buy. I use the one on top (see the pic below) as its for light to medium toned skin, the bottom is for a darker complexion or if you’re going for a more golden/bronze look. What you get in this miracle compact is all your face will ever need to achieve a perfect summer glow. The top tier contains a bronzer and a highlighter, while the bottom has the most amazing, natural looking blush and a face finishing powder. What really makes this product top-notch is the “how to” manual inside that guides you through all 4 steps, making each item impossible to use incorrectly.

When applied the way Trish recommends, you actually look like you’re glowing from the inside out. I cannot say enough about how much I’m loving this item.  As for wearability… this stuff stays on all day, I don’t even need a touch up if I’m going out after work.

So unlike the love’s of summer’s passed, there’s no heartbreak here! Just a great product to help you look amazing all summer long…

Kumbaya y’all…

Liner Notes…

Typically, “Liner notes” are the blurbs found inside album covers (or for the younger generation: CD cases/iTunes Digital booklet) where  artists  thank various contributors, friends/family and anyone else who aided emotionally or financially in the making of the album.  We don’t make music here at TRUTHisBEAUT-E, but today’s product recommendation will have you singing my praises and the praises of its creator.  Trish Mcevoy Intense Gel Eye liner is today’s featured product.

For years I have searched for the perfect eye liner (this may sound like an exercise in futility to many of you…so be it), one that doesn’t run down my face or smudge during application. Not until I discovered Trish’s revolutionary Intense Gel Eye Liner and her suggested application technique have I ever been even close to satisfied.  Cut to Liner perfection.

It comes in 3 shades (Arabian Nights-a midnight blue, Deep aubergine- a rich brown and Black) which are universally flattering for all skin tones and eye colors.  With my brown eyes and brown hair, I use Deep aubergine just about every day and the Black in the evening but I would absolutely use the Arabian nights for a swanky soiree out.

What I love about Trish Mcevoy makeup is that your face looks like you, only better.  Her concept isn’t about changing your appearance, it’s about enhancing and defining what is already there.  She knows you’re already gorgeous, she just helps you know it too.

Intense Gel Eye Liner will set you back $28, but each liner comes with a sharpener and a smudge tip on the other end (which is great for blending).  It is also rich in pigment so I find I don’t use as much as I used to with other liners.  Using her dotted technique really helps the product longevity also.  When you click on the link above you will not only get directed to her website you will also be able to watch video’s on how to apply her products properly.  Imagine having a private makeup lesson taught by Trish.

So in my liner notes I’d like to thank Trish Mcevoy for helping me to look my best and to all of you for your continued support and readership…xo Elisa

VD

It’s everywhere you look these days.  It’s overtaken the malls, your favorite stores even the pharmacies aren’t safe anymore.  It has me seeing red.  Valentines Day, whether you have a significant other or not it seems everyone feels the stresses and pressures of this holiday.  It’s like Christmas in February.

Today’s blog has a simple message, be your own Valentine.  We all know that before you can be truly good to someone else, you have to be good to yourself (hey Journey sang about it so it MUST be true).  So this Valentines day I am suggesting that you do something nice for you. Here is my list of VD inspired things you can give to yourself to perk up your mood (all for under $50)…

1. This time of year everyone’s skin can get dry and cracked, yet we all seem to ignore our hands, which is why my first suggestion is Aerin Rose Hand and Body Cream.  I love this stuff, I keep one near my bed and one in my purse.  Not only is it beautifully packaged, it smells amazing and keeps my hands soft and moisturized all year round.  Available online at esteelauder.com for $40 ($45 in Canada) and at most Estee Lauder counters.

2.  Everybody needs a good gloss and at $16 Origins Liquid Lip Shimmer in Hula Girl is the gloss for me!  It is the quintessential pink lip gloss. It goes on smooth, no sticky texture and its scented with a hint of cool mint so applying it is both pretty and refreshing.  As an added bonus, when you shop at Origins (in store or online) they are currently offering a free Liquid Lip Duo with the purchase of 2 products, which is how I was originally introduced to Hula Girl many months ago.

3.  Much like a good car show can rock a man’s world, women and lipstick share a similar relationship.  I don’t understand the science behind the brain’s chemistry and lip color, but I do know that when I am feeling less than my best a new lip stick can turn my frown upside down…literally.  A few months ago I found my new favorite shade from an old favorite of mine.  Trish Mcevoy Lip Color Collection in Rosewood is that new favorite.  Her lipsticks are rich and hydrating and scented with a vanilla/mint like scent that makes applying it a pleasure.  Priced at $28 they are long-lasting and available at all Trish Mcevoy counters at Neiman Marcus, Saks, Bloomingdales. I can’t believe I haven’t blogged about her products yet…

4.  Bath time!  My most favorite time of the day.  Work is done and it’s time to pamper me.  Ginger Float Cream Bubble Bath from Origins is my go to soak of choice.  My muscles thank me for this rich, ginger, lime and bergamot scented relief.  For $28 you get 17.6 oz of bath time bubble fun.  I generally use two scoops to fill my tub and it lasts me a long time. Technically this could be your second Origins product to get you your free Liquid Lip Duo…My generosity knows no bounds….;)

5.  Last but not least, I am deviating slightly from my recommendation variety.  As promised all my recommendations are products I use and adore.  Up until now products have been of the cosmetic kind, today I am making an exception and introducing you to something that I love so much I am actually blogging in them now.  At $49.50, my Victoria Secret PillowTalk Pajama Set  comes in under my as promised budget of $50 or less and makes sleeping and lounging around the house a lot more glamorous.  I love these pajamas, they’re soft, sparkly and super comfy.

So my job here is done.  I wish you all a wonderful Valentine’s Day and hope you all remember to “Be good to yourself!”
