For The Boys…

Bette Midler, James Caan, circa 1991. I actually saw that movie with one of my favorite boys…my Dad.

Today we’re not talking movies, we’re talking products for the men in your life. Boyfriend, Father, Brother, Co-worker, whatever the relationship I have the perfect product present for that special HE on your list.

1.  For the Fancy Pants:  With Christmas/Hanukkah just around the corner, I love to give anything from The Art of Shaving. Whether it’s one of their gift sets for grooming/shaving or one of their chrome razor stands or brushes, these gifts perform and also look great in the bathroom.  They are a little on the pricey side, but they do make excellent gifts.

2.  For the ‘Fine Shmecker’ (def: man who knows quality):   Also for the shaving enthusiast, this is my go to men’s gift, Kiehl’s Ultimate Brushless Shave Cream (Blue or White Eagle). Whoever has been on the receiving end of this gift has always assured me it’s the best shave cream they’ve ever used and that it lasts longer than anything they’d ever purchased at the drug store.

3.  For the Everyman:  As a companion piece to number 2 on this list, Kiehl’s Facial Fuel is quite possibly the best men’s moisturizer out there. They have it formulated with and without SPF 15 (you know I like options) and usually around this time of the year you can get your hands on a gift set that incorporates the shave cream, moisturizer and a cleanser. Score!

4.  For the Smooochies:  Soft lips aren’t just for women anymore. With the wide array of products out there, men have no excuse but to have lips as soft as any woman out there. Jack Black’s Therapy Lip Balm SPF 25 is my boyfriends ‘lip gloss’ of choice (his words not mine). Available at and in 5 different varieties.

So this holiday season, whether you’re shopping for a Jeffrey, a Jimmy, a Melvyn, an Elliot or a Scot don’t forget to pick up a little something up for yourself! 😉

Tea Time…

Sorry, no crumpets or finger sandwiches here. Just another awesome product recommendation.

As a rule I try not to blog about products from a company I’ve recently written about, but todays items are so good I couldn’t wait to share them with you.

So here goes…

The Black Tea Collection from Fresh has blown my mind with its firming, soothing and smoothing effects it’s had on my skin. The line consists of 4 anti-aging products (I have yet to try the serum, so today’s post does not reference it) inspired by Kombucha. When creator Lev Glazman noticed how drinking Kombucha energized the body, he came up with a skin care line that could do the same for the skin.

Black Tea Age Delay Cream at $95 isn’t cheap, but neither are its effects on the skin. I use it daily over my Chanel Weekday Serum (see Cuckoo for Coco) and it really does pack a punch. My skin feels really hydrated and Fresh (no pun intended)! After loving its results I decided to try the Black Tea Instant Perfecting Mask  and if ever a product did what it claims, this was IT! My skin was amazing after the first use. The whipped formula goes on cool and you can feel your face energized instantly. Your skin looks plump and healthier than it did before.

Since we are approaching Holiday Season, sometimes you can get your hands on a sample pack if you’re not quite ready to invest in the line since it is pricey. I am sure however once you’ve sampled the products you’ll be putting it on your “WANT! NEED! MUST HAVE!”  lists come Xmas/Chanukkah time.

So Cheers to a Happy Holiday Season!

Lots more stocking stuffers to come in the next few blogs…

The ‘C’ in this case stands for cosmetics.

Imagine if you will my gift of product knowledge. Now imagine it is matched only by my knowledge of Pop Culture and other totally random information. When you combine these 2 categories you get what I call:  Cosmetic Mathematics.

Allow me to elaborate, when you take  (A) Bobbi Brown Cosmetics (my first foray into the cosmetic world was her early 90’s collection of lipsticks) and you add it to (B) 1998’s breakout TV show Dawson’s Creek (still one of my very favorite shows of all time), what you get is a gorgeous makeup palette that is perfect for all of your needs.

Bobbi Brown’s Bobbi and Katie Palette is the item I am referring to. For $79 CAD, you get 8 neutral eyeshadows that will take you from day to night, 2 Pot Rouges (cheek/lip stains) in colors that really do flatter all skin tones and 1 Chocolate Eye Pencil. On my latest holiday it was the only makeup I packed.

Disguised as a notebook (which is way cute), this palette really does perform!

Whether you’re a Jenn, a  Joey or an Andy this palette is universally flattering.

With Christmas on its way, this would make a perfect stocking stuffer for the beauty buff on your list.

You “don’t wanna wait” for this limited item to sell out.

Time is Money…

Saving both = Priceless.

Today’s product recommendation is something that will do wonders for your skin, retails for under $40, lasts incredibly long and saves you time and money on how it’s applied.

Fresh Rose Floral Toner is that product. This alcohol free toner is as good as it gets. It comes with an atomizer, so say goodbye to those cotton pads that needed saturation to cover you entire face. In other words depending upon which eye make up remover pads you were using, that’s a savings of $5 -$20 right there, plus with 3 or 4 spritz’s post face wash, you’re done and ready to moisturize. With Fresh’s atomizer you spray the toner directly onto your face so no product is wasted, plus the bottle seems to last forever. I’ve had the same bottle for the last 2 months and I’ve barely made a dent in it.

Fresh’s Rose Floral Toner is gentle on the skin, the rose-water calms and soothes the complexion and keeps you hydrated all day long. It can help to set your make-up, in summer it can be kept in the fridge for a real skin refresher and in winter it’ll save your skin from the dryness caused by indoor heating.

So there you have it, a real multi-tasker.

Since Time is Money, today’s post is Short and Sweet…Happy Toning Y’all!

Tricks ARE Treats…

With Halloween just around the corner why do we need to choose between Trick or Treat? Can’t we have both?

Today’s post is going to be loaded with tricks and tips I’ve learned over the years to help solve some of your cosmetic woes. They may not be of the chocolate variety, but they are treats indeed. Some may even change your life, well your cosmetic life that is!

Let us begin…

#1.  Blue (not orange) is the new black:  If you make your living staring at a computer (like I do) or if you spend countless hours shopping online (like I do) you may have noticed that the whites of your eyes are no longer only white, but rather white with a myriad of red lines running through them.  Tip #1 is about how to make your eyes appear whiter and brighter. Ditch your black eye liner pencil and replace it with navy or dark blue. Lining your eyes with a blue pencil will make your eyes appear whiter, it’s that simple. If you really want to commit, go with a dark navy mascara as well.  It’s not as freaky as it sounds…I do it all the time and I’ve lived to tell about it.

My go to liners are Trish McEvoy Intense Gel Liner in Arabian Nights and Bobbi Brown Long Wear Eye Pencil in Black Navy (both retail for $28 but Trish often offers a 20% friends and family discount so check it out). As for the mascara, I love Chanel Le Volume De Chanel Mascara in Bleu, its voluminous, non-clumpy and doesn’t flake off half way through your day. FYI it passes my 3 times test.

#2.  Skincare Vs. Cosmetics:  Here is the secret, it’s not a battle! We need both. One protects and nourishes your skin while the other makes you look your best. It’s analogy time, imagine your face as your body, you wash it, moisturize it and then you put your clothes on. Your cosmetics are clothes for your face! Don’t go naked!!

#3.  Primetime:  Most of us don’t use primer. Truth be told, I used to think it was an invention of cosmetics companies to get the consumer to buy yet another product. The fact is, primer really is an important step in your cosmetic routine.  Firstly, a good primer evens out your skin tone, it also seals in your moisturizer which allows for a much smoother foundation application. Because of  the latter, your foundation doesn’t get a chance to clog your pores, which means you’re zit free with great looking skin. My go to primer and foundation are both made by Hourglass. Their Veil Mineral Primer has a spf 15, helps minimize pores, fight redness and when used with Hourglass Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation your complexion will look pretty much flawless. I particularly love the liquid to powder texture, one pump will cover your entire face and leave your skin with a matte finish all day, which means “bye-bye oily T-zone!”  I use my fingers to apply both products and will smooth out the foundation with a foundation brush.  I happen to love Hourglass’ Brush #2 for blush/foundation because it’s a PETA approved product which uses Taklon instead of animal hair and it is actually really soft and user-friendly. Hourglass is sold at Sephora stores, Barney’s New York and always available on their website.

#4.  The eyes are the windows to your soul:  Well my windows are located pretty close to one another, if this resonates with you, you needn’t worry anymore. This is my favorite tip/trick on the list. Since relocating my eyes isn’t an option, I suggest you try the following: When lining your eyes, never line the inner corner, start at the outer corner and stop lining right above the center of your lid (above your eye-ball) then smudge outward for drama. The smudging also helps to clean up any mess you’ve made along the way (my fine motor skills could use some improvement so I know a thing or two about this).

#5.  Browbeating:  Stop the insanity!!! Every decade the brow trend changes, sometimes thin is in, sometimes bold is beautiful! Regardless of trend, your eyebrows are on your face and you must take that into consideration. Tweeze for your face and not for some magazine trend!

For fear of some esthetician sneezing and waxing off all of my eyebrows I have always plucked my own brows and I have always followed these simple rules. #1. Only tweeze hairs underneath the outer part of your brows. #2. What you do to one side, do to the other, symmetry is key. Lastly, #3. Do not pluck more than 3-5 hairs at a time.  Follow these three steps and you’ll go from brow to WOW!

I like Tweezerman slanted tweezers, available at Sephora stores and most pharmacies.

So there you have todays list of helpful tips and tricks! I hope there is one in there that works for you.

Happy Halloween y’all!

Anne Sullivan

With school back in session I thought it appropriate to give a shout out to one of history’s most successful teachers, Miss Anne Sullivan. Famous for teaching a young, deaf and blind Helen Keller to communicate and thus helping her to achieve greatness as a university graduate, activist, author and inspiration to many.

Their story was made famous in the play and film “The Miracle Worker.” If you haven’t seen either, allow me to suggest Kleenex as the product of choice for your viewing. If you have seen the play/film then we can move forward with today’s other recommended product.

Though not as life affirming as Ms. Sullivan and Ms Keller’s story, Philosophy has their very own “Miracle Worker” and it’s one helluva product. Philosophy’s Miracle Worker is an anti-ageing, retinoid eye treatment that helps reduce the look of under eye bags, smooths out the skin under your eye (so it looks less crepey) and helps cell turn-over to keep your eyes from giving away your age.

“The eyes are the windows to your soul, not your age.” – their quote from the bottle.

What I love about this product is its texture upon application.  It’s not a gel, it’s not a cream, it has a slightly petroleum jelly type feel but on a much lighter/thinner scale. It feels almost warm when you first put it on, which gives way to a nice, soothing feeling and when I wake up the next morning my eyes look really well rested. They say you can use it day and night though I have only used it in the evening, but I can easily see how it’s texture would make for a very easy makeup application. You need very little product and it sinks right in. For $65 I sincerely recommend it. I think it’s a winner!

Hope you like it!

Cuckoo for Coco!

Coco Chanel that is… not the Puffs (though they are pretty enjoyable in their own right)!

I don’t know if it’s in our DNA as females, but just seeing that double “C” logo can make a perfectly sane person go ‘loco for coco!’

Their trademark quilted bags leave us week in the knees, their tweed suits are coveted by millions, their camellia designed jewelry is always breathtaking and affordable only to those who don’t have to ask “how much?”

*(FYI, when a magazine states “price upon request” what they’re saying is:  “if you have to ask, you can’t afford it”)!

Today that all changes, Chanel has recently launched a new trio of skin care products that are designed to help restore your skin to its optimal state and are actually priced competitively, which means you can ask how much and purchase accordingly.

Chanel Resynchronizing Skincare is their newest skin care innovation. Three different treatments whose sole purpose is to undo the damage done to your skin by lack of sleep, travel and all of life’s daily stresses.  What is amazing about these 3 items is that they really do work.

Chanel has used the week to structure their skin care line. Le Jour de Chanel ($85), is your week-day serum to be applied after cleansing and before your moisturizer. You will see a reduction in pore size (something many products claim to do and don’t deliver on) and a radiance to your skin that is unbelievable. Le Nuit de Chanel ($85), is your one-step, night-time face care, however if you have very dry skin you can add a moisturizer on top but I find it as yet unnecessary (maybe winter time that will change). What you will wake up to is well rested, supple, smooth skin that is awe-inspiring. Rounding up this ‘trilogy’  is Le Weekend de Chanel ($115), to be used both morning and evening on the weekends. Infused with rose-water (to calm) and glycolic acid (to exfoliate) your skin is hydrated and luminous. Of the three, I notice the biggest difference when I use this one. There is a glow to my skin that up until now has been unprecedented! I can leave my house on the weekends with this on my face and just some sunscreen and c’est tout!  If you must choose one, Le Weekend would be my choice though all three are worth the investment.

For a limited time, as an introductory offer, many department stores are offering all 3 in a boxed set for a slightly discounted price.  If you can get your hands on one go for it.  Chanel is never discounted or on sale!

This is one of those times when I get so excited about a product that I feel my words don’t do it justice. Regardless, I had to let you in on my new favorite skin care obsession. The concept (the week), the results (flawless skin) and the ritual of once again taking the time to do something kind for yourself.  This is a win-win-win item for me.

Hope your week is exceptional!

Thank You Notes…

For hundreds of years, people have been writing thank you notes for all kinds of reasons: gifts received, dinners cooked, donations made, etc.  Etiquette rules state that it is simply the right thing to do. I agree, so today I’m taking the time to thank some of my very favorite products for making my daily life just a wee bit better. (This being a blog, the online thank you is the only option I have. Having said that, the emailed thank you note simply does not cut it, a hand written card sent via snail mail is always your best bet…but that is another blog altogether).

Let us begin…

#1.  Thank you Origins, for making Vita-Zing an SPF 15 sunscreen that not only protects your face from the suns damaging rays, but also smoothes out your skin so you look like you’ve slept well the night before. This is my go to city sunscreen whether I’m biking on a hot summer day or traveling throughout Europe. A pea sized dot is all you need to cover your face and go. No other makeup is required, you’re protected and your skin looks great.  For $35 it’s ama-zing!

Vita zing#2.  Thank you, Trish McEvoy for your Flawless Lip Primer.  This product goes on before your lipstick or gloss and it conditions, fills in and smoothes out the texture of your lips so that your lip color lasts and lasts.  This item is colorless so it doesn’t alter the actual color of your lipstick, nor is it concealer-like in texture like some other lip primer products.  Your lips just feel and look great.

#3.  Thank you Fresh twice, for giving us Umbrian clay.  Umbrian Clay Mattifying Mask ($48) and Umbrian Clay Purifying Treatment Bar ($38) are two of my very favorite things to help detoxify my skin. The first of these two products is actually a 3 in 1, not only is it a mask, it can be used as a cleanser and a spot treatment for zits. It’s best for normal to oily skin and has all natural ingredients like chamomile and lavender (to soothe the skin), sandalwood oil (which has astringent properties) and Umbrian clay from Italy which is what detoxifies your skin. If that doesn’t impress the nature lovers out there, the Treatment Bar should knock your socks off (or your zits off,  we are talking complexions here). The bar can also be used as a mask as well as a cleanser, but it’s ingredients are simple: Umbrian Clay! That’s it! That’s all! How’s that for simplicity?

#4.  Most importantly, thank you readers of TRUTHisBEAUT-E for sticking with me during my first year of blogging! I love doing it and I love hearing all of your feedback. Here’s to another year of clean skin,  clear complexions and more blogs of course…

Just Brows-(ing)…

Aging can be a challenge on your face, the wrinkles/creases, the drying skin, the puffy under-eye area…but what’s with the sparse eye brow thing? For those of you that over-plucked your brows in the 90’s all I can say is, “you had it coming!”  If you are like me and always followed the tweezing rules (only the bottom outer corners get tweezed and only a few hairs at a time) you probably feel somewhat screwed.

Putting all feelings aside, there is a solution to this patchy eye brow problem. Josie Maran Magic Brows Argan Pen is a dual ended pen with a fine pointed marker on one side and a setting powder on the other. It may sound complicated to use but it couldn’t be any simpler. The felt tip side fills in the patches and the powdered side sets your work for a finish that will last all day and never run down your face! At $29 Canadian (at, which means it’s cheaper anywhere else), it will last you many, many months and only comes in one shade so there’s no difficulty finding your perfect match. As someone with dark brows, I apply it with a slightly heavier hand, if your brows are lighter in color then go gently.

This item contains no sulphates or parabens which is a huge plus in my book. What it does contain is argan oil which is naturally rich in antioxidants and helps to nourish your skin and hair.

This product passes my ‘3 TEST’, which is how I deem products totally worthy of your dollars. If I’ve purchased something more than 3 times it meets the ‘3 TEST’ criteria!

So be bold with your brows and kiss the Kojak spots goodbye!

Who loves ya baby…

Dynamic Duo!

Batman and Robin, Starsky and Hutch, Captain and Tennille… whether they are battling villains, solving crimes or singing #1 songs about Muskrats and their mating rituals, it’s amazing what the power of 2 can accomplish. Today’s recommendation is another power duo, but this time it’s by way of board certified dermatologist and internist David Colbert MD.

If you have any recollection of the above mentioned teams of 2 then you were most probably born sometime in the 1970’s or before, in which case todays 2 items will be of particular interest to you. Colbert MD  Illumino Face Oil and Facial Discs are these 2 products.

When both of today’s products are used together, they manage to enhance your skin’s natural glow and quite frankly rejuvenate your face. The facial discs (to be used 2 or 3 times per week) which can be used for 30-60 seconds in the shower remove your dead skin cells and help restore your skins natural glow while the Illumino face oil (which I use every night) helps cell repair and improves your skins tone and texture.

Long gone are the multitude of creams and night serums before bed, now it’s wash, tone and Illumino Oil and my skin has never looked better. I wake up and actually look great – like I’ve just had a facial great!

The discs come 20 in a pack and will run you $58, while the oil is pricier at $125 but will last you a long time, 1 pump is all you need per night to cover your entire face, and believe me your face will thank you. You can order directly online from Colbert MD or you can purchase his line of products from SpaceNK Apothecary or from Barneys.

These two items are truly amazing, the results will thrill you, I’m certain.
